Ghee is a clarified butter made by separating the water and milk solids from the fat. It has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic practices, revered for its healing properties and ability to nourish the body from the inside out.
Discover for yourself the many health benefits of ghee and the only recipe you need to ensure you get a glorious batch of golden ghee packed with beauty and wellness benefits every time.
What is Ghee?
Ghee is a form of clarified butter, but it's so much more than that. By removing the milk solids and water during the heating process, ghee becomes a concentrated source of healthy fats that are free from lactose and casein. This makes it a wonderful option for those with dairy intolerances. What sets ghee apart is its unique flavor and impressive versatility, whether used for frying, sautéing, or even as a skincare remedy ghee is a must-have for your pantry and wellness routine.
How to Make Glorious Golden Ghee
Learning how to make ghee at home is not only simple but also healthier and more cost-effective than buying store-bought varieties. Our Homemade ghee recipe ensures you get the highest quality ghee by giving you all the control over the ingredients, allowing you to select the best organic or grass-fed butter for optimal flavor and nutrition.
Ingredients
1x 500g block of good quality organic or grass-fed unsalted butter
Methode
Melt the butter: Begin by gently melting the butter in a heavy-based saucepan over medium-low heat. The butter will gradually separate into three layers with the milk solids sinking to the bottom, the clarified ghee in the middle, and the foam at the top.
Allow the butter to simmer gently for about 20-25 minutes. As it bubbles you can skim off the foam. This isn't a necessary step as you can move it to the side to see what happing below. The butter will start turning into a deep golden color, and the milk solids at the bottom will turn from milky white to golden amber. This transformation is what gives our glorious golden ghee its name and delicious nutty flavor.
Once the milk solids have turned to a deep dark amber, remove the ghee from the heat and let it cool slightly. Strain the liquid through a fine-mesh sieve into a jar or mold. You now have delicious homemade ghee, ready to use in your cooking or your wellness routine.
Store the ghee: Homemade ghee can be stored at room temperature for up to a month. Additionally refrigerate it to extend its shelf life up to a year.
Ghee Storage Tips and Recommendations:
To extend the shelf life of your homemade ghee, always use a clean utensil when scooping it from the jar. Store ghee at room temperature for up to a month. Otherwise refrigerate it to extend its shelf life up to a year. Keeping your ghee sealed tightly in a cool, dark place is also essential to preserving its nutrient content and flavour. I like to set the glorious golden ghee into bars using a mini loaf mold. Once set I keep then in the fridge and pull out one bar at a time to keep handy in the panty for daily use.
The Many Health Benefits of Ghee
Ghee possesses many health benefits that make this nutrient-dense ingredient so popular. From its powerful anti-inflammatory properties to its support for digestive health, ghee is much more than just a cooking fat.
Supports Digestive Health
One of the most notable benefits that ghee has is its positive impact on gut health. Ghee contains butyric acid, a fatty acid that nourishes the cells lining the intestines and promotes the production of beneficial gut bacteria. This makes ghee a great addition to your diet if you're looking to improve digestion or maintain a healthy digestive system.
Rich in Vitamins and Nutrients
Ghee is abundant in fat-soluble vitamins like A, E, and K. These vitamins are essential for maintaining healthy skin, eyes, bones, and even hormone balance. What's more, ghee from grass-fed cows contains higher levels of these vitamins, adding to its nutritional value. Whether you're following a traditional or modern diet, ghee butter can provide you with these key nutrients in a natural and absorbable form.
Anti-Inflammatory Properties
Butyric acid, one of the main ghee nutrients, also has anti-inflammatory effects that can help reduce inflammation in the body. If you're dealing with chronic inflammation or looking for natural ways to boost your immune system, ghee butter can support your health. Ayurvedic practitioners have long used ghee for its medicinal properties, making it a holistic solution for improving wellness both inside and out.
Supports Heart Health
Although ghee is rich in saturated fats, when consumed in moderation, it can actually improve heart health by increasing levels of good cholesterol (HDL). Unlike many other fats, ghee doesn’t contribute to heart disease. Instead, it can help support your cardiovascular system by promoting the production of healthy cholesterol levels.
What Makes Ghee So Nutritious?
The nutritional profile of ghee is what makes it a true powerhouse ingredient. One tablespoon of ghee butter contains:
- Calories: 123 calories
- Fat: 14 grams of fat (9 grams of saturated fat)
- Vitamins: Rich in vitamins A, E, and K, especially when made from grass-fed butter.
The nutrients in homemade ghee support a wide range of bodily functions, including maintaining healthy skin, eyes, and bones. The high concentration of short chain saturated fats found in ghee can also help improve digestion, increase energy levels, and support cognitive function.
How to Use Ghee For Cooking and Wellness
versatility is just one of the strengths Ghee possesses not only is it heat stable making it perfect for cooking at high temperatures due to its high smoke point (252°C). It can also be used in skincare, haircare, and even as part of an Ayurvedic wellness routine.
Cooking with Ghee
Due to its high smoke point, ghee is ideal for roasting, frying, sautéing, and baking. Unlike many other fats, ghee butter doesn’t break down and produce harmful compounds when heated, making it a healthier option for high-temperature cooking. The rich, nutty flavor of ghee enhances the taste of both sweet and savory dishes. To me it's like imparting the rich sweetness of the smell of fresh baked croissants into any recipe to ultimately improve its depth of flavor.
Using Ghee in Wellness
In Ayurveda, ghee is revered for its medicinal properties. Ayurvedic practitioners recommend using ghee butter both internally and externally for healing. Whether you're adding a spoonful to your morning tea or using it as a moisturizer for dry skin, golden ghee supports overall health in multiple ways. It’s known to improve digestion, balance hormones, and boost the immune system.
Final Thoughts on Ghee and Its Benefits
In closing ghee truly deserving of its "liquid gold" status. Whether you’re seeking better digestion, heart health, or simply a more nutritious and tasty way to impart flavor in your cooking, the ghee benefits are undeniable. Personally I like to make a triple batch up every other week as it's my everyday go to cooking fat. With its rich flavor and impressive health benefits our glorious golden ghee is a beloved pantry and wellness staple in my home.
Whether you're looking to boost immunity, balance hormones, or simply enjoy a health stable versatile cooking fat, ghee delivers both flavor and nutrition.
